Making Breastfeeding Easier
Did you know that August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month? We applaud all the wonderful mothers out there, whether they choose to breastfeed or not. If you decide that breastfeeding is the right choice for your family, keep in mind that it can take a lot of time and patience for both mom and baby to get used to this new way of life. While breastfeeding is perfectly natural, it won’t always feel that way.
Check out some of the items that breastfeeding moms swear by to help make the whole process a little easier:
Constant nursing can quickly take a toll on your skin and result in painfully cracked or chapped nipples. Use a nipple balm that’s safe for baby to swallow and doesn’t need to be washed off. Apply the balm before and after feeding or pumping for the best relief.
Nursing every couple of hours can lead to quite a bit of back pain. Invest in the basics–like a quality nursing pillow, glider chair and ottoman to be sure that you’re giving your back the support it needs.
Many nursing moms go through a potentially embarrassing period of overly full breasts that tend to leak a lot between feedings. Stock up on washable nursing pads to help avoid those telltale wet spots.
Also great for overly full breasts are gel or flax-filled pads that can be put in the freezer and worn inside a bra for much-needed relief–they also come in handy during weaning!
