5 Newborn Baby Tips for Parents | Bella Baby Photography
Being a new parent is a rewarding and tough job. If you have a new baby, it’s important to go easy on yourself, mom and dad, and remember that you’re learning as you go. Bella Baby Photography would love to give you some tips to make life easier as you adjust to your new job.
Remember that you don’t need to tiptoe around the house during Baby’s naptime. In fact, the womb was a pretty noisy place! Since newborns typically sleep a lot, it will be easier on the whole family if you make noise around the house so your baby continues to be used to sleeping around noise–and you can get things done.
Get comfortable with a variety of soothing methods. All newborns and infants–even the easiest of babies, will need some frequent soothing. Sometimes it takes an entire menu of methods to get the baby to settle down and that’s okay. Swaddling, rhythmic and gentle shushing, patting baby’s back, rocking, singing, nursing or sucking on a pacifier are all typical methods. Most babies will help you understand which methods work best for them, but sometimes you’ll have to pull out all the stops!
Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. We know, when you have a new baby, it seems like everyone wants to give you advice whether you need it or not. It’s par for the course, but don’t let that stop you from asking for help when you really need it. If you’re trying to successfully breastfeed, you might need to see a lactation consultant to help you get over some of the rough patches. If your baby has colic, you might need more chats with your pediatrician or a friend who has been there before.
Whenever possible, mom, give your baby alone time with dad. This will benefit everyone. Your baby will get used to being around someone other than their mama, mom will get a bit of a break, and dad will be able to foster a stronger bond to his baby. It’s natural if, in the beginning, it is hard for mom to step away, but it’s a big and healthy step for your well-being, too. You’ll get to better take care of yourself, dad will get to figure out what works to communicate with and soothe his baby, and as time passes, it won’t be such a challenge to leave your child with a sitter when needed.
It’s pretty normal and natural for a baby to prefer to sleep in mom’s arms, but we know it isn’t always practical. A baby has to sleep in their crib, too. One way to make it easier for your baby to sleep in their own crib or bassinet is to pre-warm a blanket in the dryer and then use the warm blanket as a swaddle. Remember, newborns crave warmth and really need extra warmth to sleep comfortably. This swaddle trick could be just the thing you need to help baby sleep better when you can’t hold them.
